In the caves at Lascaux, where all the art is, they found bone flutes which when reproduced were found to play a pentatonic scale... You could play modern tunes on them. 
Of interest to anthropologists.... Were these ceremonial items? Were they played for enjoyment? 
What function did music have in these very primitive societies?
