The first step in the reunification of East and West Germany was uniting their populations. Since Berlin was split in half between East and West Germany, the first step towards this was to break down the wall lying in the middle of the city and reunite the two parts of Germany. This was received quite well between the two sides and people were rejoiced to have the wall gone.
