The hunter-gatherers saw the world around them occupied by spirits performing magic, they had no way of knowing what was what because of their lack of science. They assumed they were at the center of the universe and it was flat, small and under sky.

They did not understand the difference between humans and other creatures or animals and inanimate. They assumed the sun and moon they saw in the sky were animate beings. People may assume their own movement is a thing of will but to stone age people will was spirit. They saw the world filled with many spirits or gods, they saw gods in everything that moved. The gods were within the wind, rivers, oceans and the sun. Their reflection in the water was their spirit and spirits had dominion over stretches or forest and mountain tops.
