In literature, an epigraph refers to certain elements such as remarkable phrases, short poems or quotations that are placed at the beginning of a longer work and that serve to introduce the literary work. This is commonly used in novels or long works rather than on short literary works such as poems or short stories; also epigraphs can summarize the content of the work, show the beginning of it, serve as an example, etc. This means in the case of Kamala Markandaya (Indian novelist), that uses a quotation at the beginning of one of her novels the literary term for this is an "epigraph".
