The caucus is the original process of choice in the USA, the oldest. But it fell into disuse, which is not surprising given the complexity of it. In addition to being far fetched and time-consuming, it is hardly representative of the general will of the population. In a situation where the debate is encouraged, clear voting is normal and the work of convincing among neighbors is common, the higher voices tend to gain a disproportionate weight to the uniqueness of the vote.
