Governments seek to alleviate poverty in many ways. One way is by funding nutrition programs through welfare. Basic nutrition is essential for life and also for productivity. If vulnerable groups have access to adequate nutrition through these programs they can be healthy and productive enough to gain employment. Proper nutrition also reduces the instance of illness and saves money that would otherwise be spent on healthcare.
