In the novel, Anse is claims he has always been unlucky and bad luck is something he cannot escape. However, the things that happen are the consequences of his ill choices. He claims that he has bad luck when Addie dies, but actually he didn't have money to send him to doctor. Instead of fixing Cash's leg properly, he makes it even worse.
