Great Britain and Japan had similarities and differences in the the effects of geography on the

industrialization and imperialistic growth in both nations.

Both Japan and Great Britain were

centrally located. They were island nation’s, and were both physically small. Both Japan and

Great Britain were easily protected. Both had good ports with access to the Atlantic Ocean.

(Document 4)(Document 6).

The geography of both nations helped greatly with trade. From 1790-1900, the importing of

cotton in Great Britain increased 180,00 pounds. (Document 2) Also from 1729-1832, Great

Britian exported Opium to China is exchange for luxury goods, like tea and silk. (Document 5).

The location of Great Britain also helped the growth of their power by allowing them to hold

lands in Canada, US, Africa, Australia, India and parts of Europe. (Document 1)

The geography of Japan also helped the Japanese defend themselves. As Prime Minister

explained (Document 7),

he built a large military to protect many thins on the island of Japan.
