The cueca is a musical genre and a dance of mixed loose couples of the late eighteenth century. The dancers, who wear a handkerchief in their right hand, draw circular figures, with turns and half turns, interrupted by various flourishes. Generally, it is considered a dance of conquest of man to woman, although it does not necessarily have a loving motive.

The cueca would have originated in the zamacueca and this, in turn, in the Spanish jota and fandango dances.
