The people wanted peace (out of the war in Vietnam fueled by the policy of containment) so the ones who were running for president needed to address this.
That is a true statement.
It nearly doubled the size of the United States & it made it clear to other countries that America would try to salve problems/differences peacefully.
It's called Naturalization.
