Answer:

d. heroes have the inner strength to stand up for their beliefs, even in the face of danger.

Explanation:

The first sentence reads "<em>it takes both bravery and self-sacrifice to be a hero</em>". In order to clarify this sentence through the following sentences, the best option will be option "<em>(d) heroes have the inner strength to stand up for their beliefs, even in the face of danger"</em>. First sentence talks of the bravery and inner strength of the hero, unrelenting even at the face of imminent torture or death. To further expand this point, option <em>(d)</em> has the best description for the first sentence as it also talks of the same point about the bravery and strong resistance and unyielding strength of the person.

Read this excerpt from "A Drop in the Bucket."

Answer:

The reader does not know why Diane is carrying a brain.

Explanation:

Suspense or tension in a story is when the readers are unsure about what the events in the story will be like. The feeling of not knowing what will happen, along with the eagerness to see what will happen is known as suspense.

In the given passage from "A Drop in the Bucket", the reader knows that Diane's mother is in the room. This story is about Diane France, a famous forensic anthropologist who deals with bones to specify and determine their causes of death. So, when she returned to the room with the brain in the bucket, we, along with her mother, are shocked to actually see a brain in a bucket. It may be common for Diane to deal with these things but it certainly isn't for us and her mother. And the suspense is further heightened when we don't know why she is carrying a brain like it is nothing unusual.

Thus, the correct answer is the last option.

Throughout the story I have found many moods that are created by literary elements like setting and characters. Throughout the story, the main character Marcus sets a rebellious mood through his actions. He starts using hidden programs and protests secretly against the DHS in order to go against them. In the beginning of the story, after the plot of the terrorist attack, a scary mood is created. The characters don’t know what is happening and they are scared. One of the other more important moods is suspense. The characters have no idea what will happen next. These moods set the tone of what the reader is feeling.
