To approach pathos, you use emotion, such as pity, anger, or guilt. To NOT approach pathos, you may use facts (logos), or do something to get the audience to trust you (ethos). Although, this is very hard to do because most sentences and speeches use all of them in the same sentence. Still, I hope this helps!
