Explanation:

Benedict of Nursia (480 CE—547 CE) established the Benedictine monastery in Monte Cassino. He became the founder of Western monasticism, as his teachings on obedience and particularly on silence,  were applied for monastic life all around Europe.

By 1964, Benedict was declared the patron saint of Europe by Pope Paul VI, due to the great number of monks following the Benedictine Rule throughout the Middle Ages.
