He did it as a part of the Era of Good Feelings. He wanted to reflect a sense of National purpose and a desire for unity among Americans. He also wanted to arouse good feelings on the tour. His goal was to outpour feelings of nationalist pride and reconciliation. He wanted federalist to reaffirm their loyalty to the government and accept Republican control.
