That's because there were a lot of diseases and illnesses that could kill people that weren't treatable at the time like typhoid or dysentery. There wasn't even enough women for all men so the men killed each other over who gets to be with what woman. They also had problems with the natives because of spreading tobacco plantations and they could also get killed by animals. Most of the people wouldn't make it to their 50s.

Mandarinka [93]
President Lincoln rescinded Fremont's emancipation proclamation, fearing it might push other Border States (slave states loyal to the Union) into the Confederate camp. Which best summarizes Livingstone’s description of Africa?
prohojiy [21]
In writing his book, Livingstone’s primary aim was to direct public attention to central and southern Africa, which he presented optimistically as an “inviting field” for mission work and trade (Wisnicki 2009:257). It offered him the chance to advocate a combination of Christianity, commerce and civilisation and to encourage British intervention in the continent. Undoubtedly Livingstone’s attractive, almost “utopian” vision and his major literary success, contributed to his fame and his lasting reputation (Holmes 1993:351).
