Due to weakening of central control they started to attack each other for gaining more land, and as the families kept increasing their power, peasants and merchants started to pledge their authority to Daimyos for protection. The loyalty meant offering military service, those who were incapable of giving military service used to offer food and supplies for the army. Anyone who pledged loyalty to daimyos was eligible for the protection and land.
