<em>Becoming an industrial power came with some new challenges, employees whose labor left them with a sense of exploitation felt pushed too hard by their employers and people who didn’t manage to get a job, lived in crushing poverty.  </em>

<em>As population was growing everywhere in America after 1850 some early immigrants felt like they had worked very hard in their own communities for any new immigrants to reap the benefits to the infrastructure and communities they had helped build.  </em>

<em>In 1880, 20% of the Americans lived in cities. There were 12 cities with a population over 100,000 people. In the 1890s there was a major economic downturn and urban gangs reflected wider social problems like poverty and exploitation. </em>
