What were some of the experiences that helped shape Whitman's Leaves of Grass?

English

In Brooklyn and Manhattan, Whitman observed and cataloged the vibrant city landscape. More than a decade before the Civil War erupted, Whitman traveled extensively and encountered both the expansive landscapes of the western United States and some of the darker parts of the country's character, witnessing New Orleans' booming slave trade firsthand. During the Civil War, Whitman supported the Union cause, working as a nurse in the hospitals of Washington, D.C. These experiences, undisguised and unadorned, found their way into Leaves of Grass.

Hey there! :D

Make sure to look at the capitalization. If there is a capital letter after another capital letter, it is probably the beginning of the next sentence.

Fully punctuated sentence:

Look! Half the eggs are broken. <== this is the grammatically correct sentence

What is a theme of "Song of the Open Road"? Travel allows one to connect with and feel the fellowship of others. Travel demands
blsea [12.9K]

Answer:

A). Travel allows one to connect with and feel the fellowship of others.

Explanation:

'Song of the Open Road' by Walt Whitman explores the idea of freedom and democracy. <u>He acclaims the pleasures of traveling on an 'open road' which makes him feel 'healthy and free.</u>' The speaker says that 'traveling allows an individual to connect with his self and experience the fellowship of others' and therefore, he wishes to be the master of his own destiny and chose the ways as he wants and explore the new knowledge, perspective, and much more coming his way on this open road. Thus, he suggests the idea 'strong and content, I am on the open road.' Therefore, <u>option A</u> is the correct answer.

At the motel, we used the exercise room and (swam) in
laiz [17]

Answer:

The answer would be C) swimmed.

Explanation:

If you put each answer into the sentence, you can see if it does or doesn't make sense. Ex:

Lets try A first:

At the motel, we used the exercise room and <u>swammed </u>in  the outdoor pool.

Although saying "swammed" might be fun, this does not make sense, therefore the answer cannot be A.

Lets try B next!

At the motel, we used the exercise room and <u>swum </u>in  the outdoor pool.

Again, this might be fun to say and all, but this does not make sense, so we should try C next.

At the motel, we used the exercise room and <u>swimmed </u>in  the outdoor pool.

This one makes sense and works! We should still try the last answer, D, though (you never know!)

At the motel, we used the exercise room and <u>swam </u>in  the outdoor pool.

At first glance, this may seem correct, but if you say this out loud, it doesn't make sense. The answer must be C) swimmed.

Hope this helped! :)
