Read the excerpt from "Ship's Chronometer from HMS Beagle” and consider the accompanying photo. It was not until around 1800 tha

t two London clockmakers managed to simplify the chronometer mechanisms so that virtually any ship – and certainly the larger ships of the Royal Navy – could carry them as routine equipment. Which statement best describes how the image reinforces the text? The artistic image emphasizes the chronometer’s intricate detail. The technical image clearly demonstrates the chronometer’s mechanics. The photograph depicts the popularity of the chronometer in England. The photograph enhances the explanation of the updated chronometer.

The correct answer is "The photograph enhances the explanation of the updated chronometer". The ship that carried Charles Darwin on his voyage around the world in the HMS Beagle has a nautical chronometer made by Thomas Earnshaw (1749-1828). Earnshaw further simplified the process of marine chronometer production, making them available to the general public.  Thomas Earnshaw's Marine Chronometer No.509 was manufactured around 1800 and served on a number of Royal Navy ships to determine the longitude of a spot.
