Estates General was the common estate of three estates - First estate (clergy), Second estate (nobility) and Third estate ( commoners). Before the Estates General the three estates were rigidly divided and their interests were antagonistic to each other. The absolute monarchy and economic crises brought them under one common platform i.e Estates General. Here they began to shun the separate estates and fought for a common cause. Estates General paved the way for national assembly and ultimately united France under one national identity.

It was useful because it gave the French people and the nation of France a common ground and common cause for which they were able to fight together. The newly felt sense of unity was something they hadn't experienced before and enabled them to achieve glory in their young country.

ICE Princess25 [194]

Answer:

In United States election, before an election can be successfully declared won and finished, one of the candidate needs to win the higher number of the electoral votes irrespective of whether he or she won the popular votes.

Lincoln winning the northern states only guarantees that he would secure the majority is as a result of those northern states having the majority of the electoral college votes ascribed to them irrespective of the size and population of those states.

Hence the reason Lincoln won with a margin 212–21 in the electoral college votes.
