Manifest Destiny believed that it was given by God that the settlers and new colonists should expand to both sides of the American continent. This made westward migration much more rapid as well as more dangerous and deadly for everyone involved, because it led to subjugation of the local tribes that inhabited the land. Many groups applied this to their individual situations by taking it upon themselves to go out to Oregon or California in search of land or gold.
