The Middle Ages and Renaissance periods shared many similarities and many differences. The Middle Ages were considered dark and barbaric, while the Renaissance (meaning rebirth) was a vibrant and prosperous period. Religion was important during both periods. However, during the Middle Ages religion was never questioned and the Roman Catholic Church reigned supreme. The Renaissance would see the Church viewed with skepticism and doubt.
