Design and problem solving are related. As when someone starts designing anything they come across many issues to complete that design same as when someone comes across a problem they have to solve it thinking of possible designs of the solutions.
For example the modern research has proved that people tend to understand complex ideas when explained to them visually, that is the reason that whiteboard animations are a booming industry today when it comes to complex problem solving because they have combined design with problem solving.
