What theme is portrayed in this excerpt from Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich? In reality it was just what is usually seen

in the houses of people of moderate means who want to appear rich, and therefore succeed only in resembling others like themselves: there are damasks, dark wood, plants, rugs, and dull and polished bronzes—all the things people of a certain class have in order to resemble other people of that class. His house was so like the others that it would never have been noticed, but to him it all seemed to be quite exceptional. He was very happy when he met his family at the station and brought them to the newly furnished house all lit up, where a footman in a white tie opened the door into the hall decorated with plants, and when they went on into the drawing-room and the study uttering exclamations of delight. He conducted them everywhere, drank in their praises eagerly, and beamed with pleasure

Answer:

i wouldnt say neither one is the correct answer. I believe D is more close to the answer conforming to societal conventions

Explanation:

My reason to this is because, through out the passage Leo keeps buying stuff to have a grate social status. Its like consumerism and keeping up appearances in society put together. So D is the right choice.

In line 85, it states “back he spurred like a madman, shouting a curse to the sky.” What caused the highwayman to be so angry?
kherson [118]

Answer:

The highwayman's anger was caused by the discovery of the death of Bess, the girl he loved.

Explanation:

The poem "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes tells the story of an unnamed highwayman falling in love with the daughter of an innkeeper. But the betrayal of Tim, the ostler, led Bess, the girl to sacrifice her life to save the highwayman from getting killed by the authorities.

The lines <em>"back he spurred like a madman, shouting a curse to the sky"</em> shows his anger at discovering that Bess had been killed while trying to save him. This was her way of making sure that he did not get captured and then tortured by the authorities, thereby showing her love for him. Thus, <u>the anger in him was a result of knowing Bess, his lover, had died at the hands of the authorities who were waiting for him.</u>
