Explanation:
After the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church was losing members quite frequently to the Protestants. People aligned their beliefs with that of Martin Luther and John Calvin rather then those of the strict and corrupt Catholic Church. The Catholic Church had the Counter Reformation so they could reform their church and make it more like the Protestant churches so their members wouldn't leave.

Political activities such as Spanish Inquisition were also involved in this. Primarily counter-Reformation emphasized reaching the parts of the world which were colonized.
