Because of the fact they were orphans, they didn't have any other family or a place to go. He was a fatherly figure to them, who took them in, took care of them, loved them as his own children, educated them, and raised them.

Terenty attended the two because they are orphans with no shelter and with no one to go to. It was him who included, cared, and fed them without the two understanding. He presented as a father whom they can ask about the wonders of nature. It was him who made the two foundlings live for a reason. He was their helper, their father, and their trusted friend.
