The guardsmen were responding o a report of sniper fire.


The national guard had been called in to restore order at the university. Protesters responded by pelting the guardsmen with rocks and bottles. At one point, a guardsmen thought he heard a sniper shot and fired his rifle. Other guardsmen then fired at the students, too. Four young people were killed in the incident.
