This statement is true, but not only unrealistic, now impossible. The decades prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the American government had been debating and attempting to continue its isolationist roots. At the end of the 1800s, the U.S. was involved in several incursions into the global arena, which were always deemed problematic in that the viewpoint was to take care of America by itself, within itself, isolationism. The lack of immediate involvement in World War I demonstrates this, and again here at the beginning of the U.S. involvement in World War II. The U.S. again had resisted the urge to be directly involved in the spheres of war happening in Europe and in Asia, but the Japanese had so antagonized the U.S. with their devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, that involvement in the war was now almost an obligation. With the U.S. having been involved in so many arenas of battle, their policy of isolationism quickly changed to one of capitalistic imperialism in order to obtain and plunder resources throughout the world.<span />

1.What was causing people to leave Sandwich?

- Due to the Black Plague an extremely devastating pandemic of Bubonic plague that was peaking during the exact same era throughout all of Europe. The mortality rate was extremely high and it would end up killing a third of the population of Europe.

2. What are the two reasons listed in the document that explain why the government would want to keep the people in the town?

- The first is to avoid the spreading of the disease by the migration of infected individuals and/or groups. The second is to avoid the flight of capital and or people who were needed by the English realm in order to properly function.

3. Make a reasonable conclusion based on your knowledge from this unit and the reading and explain: What would be the long-term economic and social effects on Sandwich and England if people were allowed to leave?

- Had all people been allowed to leave, the whole town would have been deserted, probably never to be inhabited again. A good portion of its inhabitants might have fled to other parts of England, worsening the pandemic and the others would have gone to the France, were England was waging the Hundred Years’ War against the French. Since many of these people might have been infected, their presence in the English-controlled parts of France might worsen the already damaging pandemic and weaken the English war effort. For England the effect would have been overall destructive due to these reasons.

In your own opinion, was Trumans decision to use atomic bombs against Japan justified? Why or Why not?
otez555 [7]
At the time, the United States was the first and only country to have access to nuclear weapons thanks to research done in Project Manhattan. The US surrounded the Japanese islands and  had the option of an all-out invasion of Japan, or drop the atomic bombs. The Japanese have a fierce military history and culture of fighting with death being a more desirable option than surrender which brings dishonor to those soldiers defeated. Honorary suicide, kamikaze, killing oneself in the face of adversity were highly documented Japanese incidents throughout WWII that proved the Japanese do not mind losing high casualties in the face of defeat. An invasion of the Japanese islands would involve millions of Japanese and American casualties, as Japan being an archipelago would involve several different amphibious invasions that would see a greater destruction over the country with more cities and land being destroyed in comparison to two bombs being dropped on two cities. For these reasons, the atomic bomb dropping was justifiable at the time as it lead to fewer deaths in comparison to an invasion that would be more costly and time consuming.
