According to the extract, the words that describe Fredo's house imply that the house is full of metal, which means that the correct option is 1. Metal filled the house. This can be inferred because from the beginning of the text metaphorically the house becomes the lair, the hive, the storeroom and the complex of chambers of different iron animals. Also, the passage says: From wall to wall, from floor to ceiling the mountain of metal was broken only by a thin corridor. Based on that the readers can deduce that it was only a thing space without metal because there is a mountain of metal filling the house.

The correct answer is: 1. Metal filled the house.

As we compare the animals mentioned in the excerpt bellow we can see that they are characterized by having a special place to live, a place that they constructed. By putting the adjective “iron” before their names the author indicates that that material in particular is their favorite as well as Fredo's. Nothing in the metaphors indicate that those places have organization and tidiness in common so number 2 is incorrect. Fredo’s house may be only safe for him so number for is incorrect too. And all of those habitats are different so his house is not mimicking one in particular.
