Excerpt from Changing the Curriculum Natalie Stewart 2 Randall’s fourth period English class seemed to drag on forever. The assi

gned reading list his teacher had handed out in the beginning of class was a huge disappointment to this book lover; the curriculum was stale like week-old bread. After analyzing the list at the dinner table, his parents remarked that they had read many of the books assigned to Randall’s class. Teachers were subjecting today’s students to a thirty-year-old reading list! This didn’t make any sense to Randall. Though he understood the value of classical literature, Randall felt that the curriculum needed a better balance of old and new. The result was that Randall addressed the teachers at the curriculum meeting. What was the cause? Think about cause-and-effect relationships.
A) He wanted his favorite books added to the curriculum reading list. B) He wanted his teachers to know how angry he was about the reading list. C) He wanted to be permanently switched out of his fourth period English class. D) He wanted a balance between classic and modern literature on the reading list.

Assuming the underlined verb form is masquerading, the correct answer is B. gerund.
Although gerunds and participles look the same (both have the form verb + -ing), the difference is in their function - participles are used as either adjectives or adverbs, whereas gerunds are used as nouns within a sentence.
