Paul F. Covington 's excerpt sounds wordy because he has written information which is not relevant to apply for a job.  Besides, he also sounds quite informal. "I really <em>just</em> began as a<em> lowly </em>data-acquisition specialist.." in this quotation the words in italics are  instances of informal language. "....but through a lot of hard work and a very strong work ethic ..", in this quotation Paul is bragging that he is a hard working and ethical employee, which  doess not sound professional."...earned a much, much higher hourly wage.", through these words, Paul gives personal information about his pay. He is not expected to do so in a cover letter.
