Bloodborne pathogens refer to infectious microorganisms that can cause disease in humans when present in human blood. The most common bloodborne pathogens include Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).

The means through which people, workers get exposed to the pathogens are through piercing from needles sticks, cuts from sharp objects, bites,  wounds and punctures. Also a person is exposed when blood of an infected person comes in contact with their eyes, nose, mouth, skin abrasions, broken skin or scratches with blood.

Equipment need to be sterilised to reduced exposure. Also Personal Protective Equipment are recommended to be worn when dealing with an infected person.
