The first one is the fact that the travellers had completed a six weeks journey in only three days and nights. The second one is the fact that Gilgamesh climbed to the mountaintop. Both feats require exceptional strength and endurance, which heroes often display.
Older people are less susceptible to conformity because they've most likely been in conformity for a majority of their lives (older generations had less freedom) and they don't want to go through that again.
