Justice Black, in the landmark case, ruled that students are entitled to exercise their constitutional rights, even while in school. He decided to allow the Tinkers to wear their armbands as a symbol of protest against the Vietnam conflict. Black ruled that the wearing of the armbands would not interfere with the day to day running of the school. Justice Black also noted that school officials did not prohibit the wearing of any other political symbols by students.
