In 1534, Henry VIII officially broke with the Church of Rome by publishing in Parliament the Act of Supremacy, document by which he became head of the Church in England, later called Anglican. Excommunicated by the pope, Henry VIII, in reprisal, confiscated the assets of the Catholic Church in England.
