I'm pretty sure it is c. provoke further though because the speaker is asking the audience further questions to keep them thinking about why he is correct (i.e. why you should groom your dog yourself and not take him/her to the groomers).

Other words that contribute to this mood of despair are "fear", "faint", and "hungry". A person usually only feels these things and discusses them when they are in a place that is dangerous and that they have no real hope of getting out of.
