The driver has to drive 20 miles to come back to the starting point directly

Step-by-step explanation:

The driver has driven in the form of two legs on a right-angled triangle where the vertical side (perpendicular) is 12 miles and the horizontal side (base) is 16 miles.

Now as the driver has to return back to the starting point directly, it will form a right-angled triangle making the direct path a hypotenuse

So,

B = 16

P = 12

H = ?

we have to find the hypotenuse

As the triangle is a right angled triangle, we can use the Pythagoras theorem to find the length of hypotenuse So,

H^2 = B^2 + P^2\\H^2 = (16)^2 + (12)^2\\H^2 = 256+144\\H^2 = 400

taking Square root on both sides

\sqrt{H^2} = \sqrt{400}\\H = 20

So

The driver has to drive 20 miles to come back to the starting point directly

zhannawk [14.2K]
This problem deals with a weighted average. Since the AP classes count twice as much as regular classes, their grades must be counted twice. It's as if for each AP class he's taking, he was taking two classes. The points of each AP class grade is added twice, and the each AP class counts as 2 classes in the number of classes.

Each AP class counts twice and counts as 2 classes.
