In the North, in contrast to the South, the plantation slavery system brought little profit, but it required large expenditures, and, therefore, was economically unprofitable. Therefore, they gradually began to abandon it and get rid of slaves. Nevertheless, in the northern states, there were also slaves, mainly domestic servants, farm laborers, etc. Free blacks in the North could have tiny farms, sometimes shops and workshops, which were visited exclusively by their brothers in color.
