The excerpt given above is taken from Phillis Wheatley's poem "On Being Brought from Africa to America". The word sable literally means color black. In this line, Wheatley uses the word "sable" to indicate sense of inferiority. The author is an African and their race color is different from the rest.

Answer:

The word "sable" transfers a tone of inferiority. This inferiority was imposed, by the whites, to the blacks who were brought from Africa to America.

Explanation:

The word "sable" refers to something dark, black, bad, filthy, and somber. When the author used that word, he wanted to emphasize how blacks were viewed by whites and convey a tone of inferiority and repulsion so that the reader would feel how blacks were considered.

What is Miller’s purpose in including the irony in this scene? Explain thoroughly, using textual evidence from the excerpt above
Korolek [52]

Hello. You did not indicate which scene and which play you are referring to. However, Arthur Miller's plays have many scenes of situational irony and the author uses this type of irony to surprise the audience, because it allows a totally unexpected situation to happen, something totally different from what the audience expected.

An example of this can be seen in "the crucible" when Rev. Hale tests John's religiosity by asking him to recite the 10 commandments and proves innocence in his accusations. Since John is a very eloquent and Christian man, the public is sure that he will have an easy time reciting. He really has it at the beginning, but he starts, but he can't recite the 10 commandments and he recites just 9, surprising the audience.

The feature of medieval life that is reflected in this excerpt is the acceptance of the Church's authority.

This excerpt is part of "The Pardoner's Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer. Moreover, it shows the acceptance of the Church's authority in the Middle Ages. During this period, the Church was not only a powerful force but also the dominant institution since it had the power to influence and control every aspect of people's lives. In this excerpt, the narrator refers to the power of members of the Church, priests and clerics, of interdicting someone, which means prohibiting someone from doing holy work.

When is the passive voice a useful tool in writing?
frozen [14]
Passive voice is sentence construction because the subject is placed to the end of the sentence and thus acted on rather than acting. For example, the dog bit the boy in passive should be, the boy was bitten by the dog.
Passive voice is a useful tool in writing when the writer wants to emphasize that someone is receiving an action and not doing it. For example, Cyrus repaired the bus here bus is the object. In passive voice it should be the bus was repaired.
