The southern colonies economy was centered around cash crop while the New England colonies economy was centered around fishing and shipping. The new England colonies were also very strict in religion (puritans), while the south was much more religiously tolerant
They all had different desires
Puritans because they believed that they were people that were to "Purify" there peers.
There were things missing from the land in Mesopotamia that made the Sumerians trade. It was not a desire or a want, they needed to trade. In this case, they needed wood and eventually they had to trade their surplus for it and other things they didn't have but needed badly.
