President Roosevelt gave his Four Freedoms speech in 1941 as his State of the Union address, asking Congress and the American pe

ople to support those fighting Hitler and his allies. Read the following excerpt.
This nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women; and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights or keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose. To that high concept there can be no end save victory.

How does this excerpt develop the theme that the United States should get involved in World War II?

A. It concludes that the United States wins wars because it values human beings.

B. It points out that the United States is better than others because it values human rights.

C. It explains that many people are suffering in other countries.

D. It argues that the United States should protect human rights everywhere.

Answer: A) It concludes that the United States wins wars because it values human beings.

Explanation: In literature, the theme is the underlying message of a story, it is  what critical belief about life is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel, play, short story or poem. Usually this belief, or idea, is universal and transcends cultural barriers. In the given excerpt from President Roosevelt's Four Freedoms speech, we can see the theme that the United States wins wars because it values human beings (freedom and human rights).
