The Anti-Imperialist League did not believe Abraham Lincoln would have supported –the annexation of the Philippines because the Filipinos do not want to be a portion of the United States, and it is said in Lincoln’s speech that no man should be ruled with his accord.

When the white man governs himself, that is self-government, but when he governs himself and also governs another man, that is more than self-government-that is despotism. Therefore the Anti-Imperialist League did not believe that Lincoln would have supported the Annexation of the Phillippines.
