The answer is: <em>"for his father was as strong as an ox and as stubborn as a mule."</em>  This sentence is an example of  direct characterization because it takes a <em>direct approach</em> to build the character. The author chose the <em>narator</em> to describe the qualities of one character, <em>Johann's father</em>: ' as strong as an ox and  as stubborn as a mule.' Characterization is the step by step used by the author to introduce  and describe a character.
