The correct answer is C. Sarcasm is verbal irony used in a mocking way.

Explanation:

Verbal irony focuses on conveying a message that is the opposite of the literal meaning of the words used. This implies in verbal irony there is an incongruence between the real message of the speaker and the words he/she uses, due to this, the use of verbal irony is often related to humor.

On the other hand, sarcasm focuses on mocking someone or criticizing society by using exaggeration and irony to show flaws or negative aspects. The previous idea implies sarcasm is verbal irony but different from regular verbal irony the purpose is to mock or criticize someone or something rather than only using humor. Therefore, the difference between sarcasm and the verbal irony is "Sarcasm is verbal irony used in a mocking way".

Read the student thesis, then answer the question. There have been many studies about the effect too much television has on chil
padilas [110]

The answer is B: clearly take a side.

A thesis statement is the main point or central message that writers include at the beginning of their writings since it explains the main ideas they are going to develop in the rest of the essay.

In every thesis statement not only does the writer include the topic of the essay but he/she also presents a comment or statement that tells the readers the writer’s position in relation to the topic being discussed; that is, if the writer is for or against the topic he/she is going to develop later.

In this thesis statement the writer has included the main idea that he/she is going to develop in the essay (that is, the effect too much television has on children), and he/she has also included the two opposite viewpoints regarding the topic. However, he/she has forgotten to include his/her opinion: Does he/she agree or not?

So, in order to improve this thesis, the writer must take a side.

In the body of the essay, the writer can include his/her reasons for being for or against the topic and he/she can even include quotes and statistics from different sources in order to support his/her ideas. They do not need to be included in the thesis statement.

One concept of a (n) ________ is a society in which each individual maintained his or her ________ yet collaborates with others
PSYCHO15rus [73]

Answer:

Utopia; autonomy.

Explanation:

Utopia can be defined as a type of society that is typically characterized by ideal perfections and as such the people living there are mainly happy, as well as working well with each other.

This ultimately implies that, one concept of an utopia is a society in which each individual maintained his or her autonomy yet collaborates with others to achieve the good for all.

However, a utopian society is just a figment of people's imagination or perception and as a result doesn't exist in reality. Thus, it is not a reflection of what is obtainable in the real world because no society can ever have an ideally and totally perfect condition, law, government and people.
