Though democratic candidate Samuel Tilden won more majority votes than Republican candidate Rutherford B. At this, the white southern democrats presented a number of promises to the African-American voters which they would fulfill if they come into power. However, all these promises were not fulfilled. Instead the Jim Crow Segregation bill was imposed across the South and voting rights of black men were disfranchised.
