Religion always had its place in the educational system of US. The Genesis creation narrative was generally taught as the origin of the universe and life itself. On the other hand, the scientific Darwinian theory of evolution has become accepted in different states since the late 1800s.

After all the changes in the aftermath of WWI, such as the increase of the population and the need for more public schools, fundamentalist feared the widespread of the scientific idea. They joined the campaign of William Jennings Bryan and introduced the prohibition of teaching evolution in several states. As we pointed out, some states passed laws favoring creationism over evolution.
