Slavery was abolished in the whole territory of the United States after the war and northern politicians promoted bill and amendments to try to achieve equality for the African Americans. The South´s economy was ruined, ravaged by the war and the Reconstructuion Era came to rebuild economicalyl the South. Politically, southern states were reincorporated into the Union and they had to swear loyalty  to the Constitution.
