Interwar diplomacy.

After the world war one, the United States was discouraged in joining international commitments that could lead to another war. The US played a role in international negotiations to set arms limitations and created pacts with a mission to securing lasting peace.

The Washington naval conference

Between 1921 and 1922 a conference to discuss naval disarmament was held in Washington and was attended by naval powers around the world. Policymakers worked to reduce rising threats of another war. The five power treaty was signed by the US, UK, Italy, France and Japan.

During the great depression of the 1930s the US government became more isolated and were not involved in many international activities. Attention was given to domestic problems and rebuilding of the economy.

These diplomacies were unsuccessful because war was seen as political and great developments were decided by war. The concept of security and power was majorly based on and determined by military strength.
