1. The north relied less on slaves because the north was primarily factories.

2. The invention of the Cotton Gin increased the need for slavery

3. There were many businessmen that grew rich putting investments in the south for slaves

4. The Missouri Compromise was a bill that allowed for Maine to become a free state so Missouri could become a slave state. This allowed for the North and the South to be equal in power.

5. The Compromise of 1850 was 5 bills that allowed California to become a free state, let Utah and New Mexico to decide to be free or slave state, let slave owners find their fugitive slaves easier and defined a new border between Texas and New Mexico.

6. The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed for the people living there to let it become a free or slave state. Due to the conflict and violence of people on both sides this became to what was known as "Bleeding Kansas".

7. The two political parties were the Republican party and the Democratic party. The Republican party wanted slavery to be abolished and favored the North. The Democratic party favored slavery in the South.

8. William Lloyd Garrison was a journalist. He wrote "The Liberator which was a popular anti-slavery newspaper. He wrote in this until slavery was abolished. He believed the US Constitution favored Slavery.

9.  Nat Turner was an enslaved man that lead a rebellion. As a young slave he was taught how to read and write. He believed he was chosen by God to free all of his kind and lead a rebellion of 75 enslaved men which murdered 51 white people.  This resulted in harsher treatment to slaves.

10. Slave Codes were a set of rules based on the concept that slaves were property and not individuals. The codes protected white slave owners from violence against their slaves.

11. Uncle Tom's cabin was a anti-slavery novel. This helped lay the foundations of the 1860 election and candidacy of Abraham Lincoln which was against slavery.

12. In December of 1829 David Walker published his appeal and relied on sailors going to the south to spread the word. He used clothing to stitch it on to the clothing.
