Elam, Ninevah, Babylon were but beautiful vague names, and the total ruin of those worlds had as little significance for us as t

heir very existence. But France, England, Russia...these too would be beautiful names. Lusitania too, is a beautiful name. And we see now that the abyss of history is deep enough to hold us all. (“The Crisis of the Mind,” p. 1)
Which of the following best describes the purpose of Valéry's reference to ancient civilizations in the above passage?

We still remember them so we should be encouraged that our civilizations won't be forgotten either.

While no one can know the future with certainty, humanity has made a lot of progress and isn't likely to be destroyed.

While the names of both ancient and modern civilizations may be beautiful, whatever of value any of them have done may be lost forever.

Essimism is self-destructive; we must move forward and not repeat our mistakes.

The correct option is this: WHILE THE NAMES OF BOTH ANCIENT AND MODERN CIVILIZATION MAY BE BEAUTIFUL, WHATEVER OF VALUE ANY OF THEM HAVE DONE MAY BE LOST FOREVER.
The author in the above passage refers to the ancient civilization in order to pass across the message that, just as those civilization disappear with nothing left of them, the modern civilization will also disappear one day. The depth of history is deep enough to swallow up both the past and the present.

What attitude toward society is best reflected by Thoreau’s actions in Walden?
aalyn [17]
I believe that the correct answer is <span>a desire to retreat from society when necessary.
Thoreau greatly valued nature as the ultimate source of peace and happiness. He believed that humans cannot truly be happy in cities, surrounded by concrete and malice, but should rather escape to nature and lead fulfilled lives instead.

Write a short story on a memorable time in your life
Luda [366]

Answer: Family time

Explanation: Me and my family love watching horror movies, except for my sister. So we would choose about 2-3 horrors movies to watch at night, we would make popcorn, gets drinks, order food. Once we got it all. We would sit on the couch and put on the scary movies as we watched it, we would laugh, scream, and cover our faces. It's really fun watching it with my family, to be honest it was the most fun I ever had. We would hug each other some of up would snuggle up to one another if we were scared. But we loved horror movie night. That's why I love family time

Hope this helps^^
